About Craft Village

The foundation stone ceremony of Bihar's first Shilpgram (Craft Village) was held on February 20, 2026 by Shri Arun Shankar Prasad, Minister of Art-Culture department, government of Bihar. Supported by the Ministry of Textiles and Bihar Museum, the ₹9.02 crore project is implemented by the BSRDC under the guidance of Mr. Ashok Kumar Sinha, Additional Director of the Bihar Museum cum the nodal officer for this Shilpgram project. Directed by Shri Anjani Kumar Singh, it aims to promote Mithila art and support local artisans. Jitwarpur village in Bihar's Madhubani district is also known as the "School of Mithila Painting." With four hundred households, this village is the only village in the country to have produced the most Padma Shri artists i.e. a record. Three local artists—Jagdamba Devi, Sita Devi, and Baua Devi—have received the Padma Shri award. Additionally, there are 18 national and over 50 state-level artists. The village boasts artists from all four styles of Mithila painting—Kachni, Bharani, Tantra, and Godna. The Shilpgram project also aims to develop the village's infrastructure.
