Birth of Buddha

Rectangular slab showing ‘Birth of the Buddha’; flanked on left proper by a broad pilaster on which is an image of the Buddha, seated on a lotus above acanthoid foliage, right hand in abhayamudra and left held against body holding something; slightly damaged. The main scene shows Maya Devi holding a branch of tree with right hand standing under the branches of sala-tree with infant Buddha shown issuing from her right arm-pit and being taken over by the Sakra who holds a cloth. Below this, the child Bodhisattva is shown taking his first steps. Mahaprajapati, Maya’s sister on left, supports Maya Devi, further on the left is a female figure with a flask, other male and female devotees in two superimposed rows on left and right; on right proper in upper row have been shown a drum, harp, a Deva with an instrument.
